i am having trouble finding out if i can use a umax 3400 astra scanner with my compaq presario 333 mhz celeron, it has a 8 gb hd, 96 ram, win 98, ie 5.0, i have seen some conflicting issues about a via chipset version 1.0 vs 1.1 and this computer may not be compatible to the 1.1 chip set version umax has? thanks

First, you need to determine what chipset is in the computer. The easiest way to do this is to look in the book provided with your motherboard. It should tell you what chipset is on the motherboard.

If you cannot find the book, here is the steps to find out what chipset you have:

You need to download a free utility from Unicore which identifies your BIOS and your chipset.
Here is the link:

Install this program and run it. When you open it, click the "Get Bios Information" button. It will show you your chipset along with the other information.

If your chipset is not VIA 1.0, then you have no problem. If it is, then you need to work around the conflict or get another scanner. I don't think you can change your chipset without replacing your motherboard.
