Please can you tell me:- is there a general "rule of thumb" as to whether you should A)Save to disc OR B)Run from Current Location when downloading?
What are the differences?

Always save the file to your hard drive. It's faster, easier, and you can then make a copy of the file AFTER you've downloaded it and put it somewhere else.
If you have a Zip drive, or some other large storage device, you could just download right to that device. But don't "open from current location" if you want to be able to use the product again and again on your computer.
