What is the best/cheapest way to get a web site into a search engine? there are so many out there,"it makes your head spin". Yahoo! is out at $300. for a probable permanent turndown. I need some help here, thanks neuguy

It is still possible to get free listing at some of the major search engines.

I included an article by Merle in my last ezine, listing the requirements, which SE's feed others, and some sites that give advice. Read it on-line at http://www.freesitebuilder.co.uk/archives/current.html
Another useful site is http://www.pandia.com

Make sure that your keywords are relevant, and also appear in the main text of your page as often as possible.
http://www.keywordcount.com will look at your pages, count how often your keywords appear, and send you an email report. Then you can adjust your text and keywords.

Getting listed is a project even bigger than creating a web site!
