scandisk starts and stops repeatedly and never finishes

You have some programs running in the background that is changing the info on your disk, causing scandisk to restart repeatedly. There are 2 ways to correct this, the first takes quite awhile, press Ctrl-Alt - delete, all at the same time and a window will open showing you what is running, click on 1 of them to highlight it, then on "End Task", that will shut down that item, you have to keep doing that until you get all of them shut down except "Explorer" and "Systray", these two, you never want to shut down.

A quicker way is to shut down your computer, then re-start, as soon as it starts booting, press F8 repeatedly on the top of your keyboard until your computer boots into "Safe Mode". It will say Safe Mode on the 4 corners of your screen and the icons will be larger and the colors will look strange, do the scandisk in Safe Mode (no other programs will be running in the background), when it is finished, shut down your computer and re-start and it will go back to a normal boot.
