The restrictions are usually on what services you get - I've got affiliate links on free hosting. Their main concern is how much traffic you'll be getting, how much "bandwidth" you'll use (the amount of stuff that's downloaded - this includes your web pages, any pictures, etc), and how much disk space you take up. Many won't allow file downloads like programs or ebooks, because that would use too much bandwidth.

From their point of view, whether you link to another site with an affiliate link or a "plain" link makes no difference. But take a good look at various hosts and see what they allow.

I am planning to create a "jokes" website but with affiliate links. Would this make it a commercial website? Would a hosting company say it was not a private site and insist that I pay for business hosting?
