You need to do this in DOS. Here's some info on making old HDDs secure, and the data unrecoverable:

Whether you need to go that far depends on who you're giving it to - if it's someone you trust, with average PC skills like most of us, a format is probably OK. If it's possible that it might end up with an expert, you'll need to take te advice from that link.

After Buying a new Computer and transfering all my files. I want to format my hard drive on my old computer to remove all the data. before giving it away.How do I do this? Windows won't
let me because it will erase it too!
