I would just like to alert anybody who uses the forum to a virus I aquired a couple of days ago.
I was searching in the MS search engine for a gif program. I saw a link that said Paint Shop Pro 6 free. Being stupid i clicked on this link not realising the consequences. The site that came up was warez.com. This site completely took over my computer, replacing my homepage, went into my favorites and placed cookies all over my pc. Each time i thought i had cleared it, back it came. Now, the point I am making is that the sites were pornographic sites and illegal downloads that took over my pc so if you have children or grandchildren using your pcs, you need to be aware that even my firewall and virus scanner didn't pick this virus up.
I would like to say thank you to the newbie club, in particular Jann who came to my rescue within a very short period of time to help me clear up the mess of my own making.
I am a regular visitor to the forum board but am too embarrassed by my own stupidity to sign this letter to you all, so please forgive me for going anonymous on this occasion.

There is nothing to be embarrassed about when it comes to being tricked into going to a site that you believe is one thing, but ends up being something else. I think we have all had one of those experiences, and I am sorry that you ended up at a more malicious site.
It is true that problems are just a link away on the internet. Of course, help, like the newbie club, is only a link away too... just part of the internet world.
Just saying somethign to let you know that someone else has been there, done that, and got the cookie to prove it!

Hi, I'm a real Newbie, but just getting on in years. I have aquired (maybe visiting a taboo site) as my wife would call it, a new SEARCHBAR.
It sits at the bottom of my screen, and tries to second guess what I am surfing for and offers all sorts of things.
I purchased Spyware Nuker for $49.95 which claimed it would rid me of this SEARCHBAR ( it did actually name it and said it was getting rid of it) IT DID NOT. Can anyone out their help me on this. Thanks in advance, Russ

Not just at taboo websites anymore the spyware is everywhere. Try ad-aware at http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=506 and spybot seek and destroy at http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10122137.html?part=104443&subj=dlpage&tag=button these are the 2 best spy protection programs on the market and best of all they are free. they work on all operating systems from windows 95, 98, ME, XP, 2000, and NT. I use them both I hope this helps
