Some people tell me to shut down my computer twice a day and some people tell me not to shut down unless unless I really have to. Who is right??

How long is a piece of string? Even the experts argue about this, so what hope have us newbies got?
I switch mine off when I'm not going to be using it for a while, mainly to save wasting electricity and to stop our room overheating.
It doesn't do it much good to switch off and on every time you go to make a coffee, as the parts expand and contract as they heat and cool, so eventually it would cause a problem. I've seen some experts claim never to have switched off for months, others suggest rebooting daily will stop Windows crashing.
